In Love Alone (an opera intime) is a new one-act chamber opera with music by Clint Borzoni and libretto by Dr. Judith G. Wolf. Built entirely from poems by Dr. Wolf, In Love Alone is a tale of self- actualization. The protagonist is a woman coping with the loss of a loved one through words of wisdom, witticisms, and her connection with a new love. As she faces growing older after a long marriage, she feels trapped and conflicted about her conventional life. Throughout the opera her interest in a new female love unfolds. As her male partner dies the woman is freed to become the person she really is and seek the relationship she truly wants.
Utilizing three singers, Borzoni’s setting of the visceral poems creates a soundscape of great emotional diversity filled with recollection, longing, and humor. With minimal staging needs, the piece also provides an ample vehicle for the singers and instrumental ensemble to be the primary focus of the journey traced by the poetry.
